Septura - British brass septet

Post by Septura »

Septura is a relatively new British brass septet. We're recording a series of discs for Naxos, creating a whole load of new arranged repertoire for the septet. Pete Smith (Philharmonia Orchestra) and Sasha Koushk-Jalali are our virtuosic tuba players.

Check it out and let us know what you think!

Thanks! Glad you like it.

We transcribe all our own repertoire, and we're recording 10 discs over 5 years for Naxos. Each disc is focused on a particular period and genre, and so the process will gradually build up our repertoire. So the first was 19th-century choral and organ music (Brahms, Bruckner, Mendelssohn, Schumann); the second (which will be released in April) is music for the Baroque theatre (Rameau, Purcell, Blow, Handel); and we recorded the third in December - 20th-century Russian chamber music (Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Scriabin). At the moment we're doing the transcriptions for the fourth disc, which is sacred polyphony (Lassus, Victoria, Palestrina, Gabrieli). Amazing music!

We've got some new videos which will appear on our YouTube channel over the next couple of months. If you want to keep posted, friend us on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/septuraofficial" target="_blank" target="_blank), or follow on twitter (@SepturaOfficial).

As for the tuba:

I have known the 15" belled British Eb comper since 1966. And since 1972 I knew about some players having that bell exchanged with the 19" bell. Even own a 19" Besson 981 from 1999.

But only since the last month I have been aware of Besson New Standard or B&H Imperial Eb compers also having been fitted with 17" inch bells.

First I saw a video with Rex Martin playing in a faculty quintet. Then Mr. Tuba from Wales presented a restoration in a not so usual finish of lacquer over frosted brass. And now this tuba also looks like having a 17" bell.

Great stuff. The Bruckner is especially nice.

I hope the transcriptions become available for sale as well.

Hopped onto Naxos last night and listened to the Brahms, Bruckner, Mendelssohn, Schumann: Music for Brass Septet album.

Really great playing. Looking forward to hearing more!
