As almost everyone on the planet knows, it has a built-in calendar with reminder tones...

...so I just bought a a 2015 pocket planner (paper calendar) off of eBay (again...as I have since 1974).

I still use a pocket calendar. I have 'em going back over thirty years. I have a 'smart' phone, too. But... the paper still works best.

YES! Not just the pop stuff either.The Grammy for the best classical contemporary composition left me wondering where are we going with this? Although I must admit they did include the word "contemporary" in the title.

Originally called the Grammy Award for Best Polka Recording, the award was first presented to Frankie Yankovic in 1986. Previously, polka recordings had been placed in the folk category.[3] While neither Billboard nor the Recording Industry Association of America tracked polka sales at the time the award category was introduced, polka musicians viewed its inclusion as a sign of respect and increasing popularity.[3][4] In 1987, a tie vote resulted in awards being presented to Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra for the album I Remember Warsaw as well as to Eddie Blazonczyk's Versatones for the album Another Polka Celebration. In 1992, the name of the category was changed to Best Polka Album. Beginning in 2001, award recipients included the producers, engineers, and/or mixers associated with the nominated work in addition to the recording artists. The Academy retired the award category in 2009 to remain "relevant and responsive" to the music community.[5][6]

Re: ice fishing, I was driving around the other day, and saw people ice fishing here. My gut reaction was "there's people on the ice, get off of there you morons, you're going to fall..." and then I remembered, I'm not on the east coast anymore. (Just a few weeks ago, a kid died trying to cross a "frozen" lake behind my old high school in Baltimore. I always remember seeing kids cross the lake, which was NEVER thick enough ice for that to be a good idea.)

PR? Nice! If you haven't been before -- try a mofongo, don't pay any attention to those to say they're horrible gut bombs. Paella is just fried rice with cheap seafood from a freezer bag, not the elaborate Spanish version. They have some of the world's best coffee.

I lived in Puerto Rico for two years and spent a few months in and around San Juan. My wife would love to go back and see it with me someday. Enjoy!

I thought the mofongo was pretty good, but my favorite was chuletas (fried pork chops) with rice and beans. Fried plantains are great too! The plantain is like the potato down there. They fry it, mash it, etc. Great food! I loved it! I don't think I ever tried anything I didn't like!

Just for fun, as you walk down the street, tell people "wepa" (pronounced "way-pa"). It's a Puerto Rican word that can be somewhat equated to "wassup" I guess. It's just a Puerto Rican slang greeting. They'll think you're a native!

I keep trying to convince the wife that we need to drive out on the lake and do some donuts; she's not thrilled with the idea and keeps knocking it down.

And then some. Tostones is the most potato like prep that comes to mind. That's good, but amarillos is it for me - a little sweeter but with a slight tartness. And then the maduros for dessert. I could go bananas. I never noticed any particularly great fresh fruit type bananas, though - like the little "apple bananas" they grow in the Hawaiian islands.

The only disappointment, I inquired everywhere about the not-frozen diaquirí that I know only from reading about it, apparently the original form of the drink, just lime juice, rum and sugar over cracked ice and not blended. Someone would occasionally rise to the challenge and attempt to make one, but it is no longer familiar if it ever was. Better to ask for a caipirinha, made with the Brazilian spirit whose closest equivalent is the rum that's one of Puerto Rico's major exports.

I'm not a drinker, so I can't speak to those, but yeah, I love tostones....Every once in a while I make Puerto Rican food at home, and I always make tostones! In fact, Dan "TubaTinker" Schultz and his lovely wife came over while they were in town for the Windjammers convention and I made them Puerto Rican food. Good stuff...

Now I want to go home and make tostones...
