This live recording is full of fun! The tuba sound is sick.

Oh that's by far my favorite ring cycle. Wotan (John Tomlinson) is unbelievable, a true bass which is not normal. Barenboim has the uncanny ability to make whatever group he is in front of perform at their absolute best. There are perhaps more in tune recordings and "tighter" recordings, but I don't know that you'll find a more passionate and raw recording than this one. The tuba playing is indeed sick.

Also, check out his Tristan und Isolde DVD from Bayreueth for more Barenboim/Wagner goodness! His Meistersinger is also great and there's a variety of Parsifal recordings from Bayreuth that will make your hair stand on end (Sinopoli comes to mind).

I'm definitely a Bayreuth junkie, lots of great recordings! Barenboim is just amazing!

That's what I was thinking. The resonance of his sound is remarkable. Not that he's the only one who can do that, but this is at least someone who sounds a great deal like him.

I'm pretty sure this is Hans Gelhar.

I went to study with Mr Gelhar (prof.) in Cologne, after studying with Walter Hilgers for a semester. Hilgers was about to move to Weimar from where he was teaching and playing in Hamburg, and he put me in touch with his former teacher-Hans Gelhar.

When I studied with him in 1994, he was coming to the end of his playing career but I still remember the unbelievable sound that he had, it is quite possibly the purest sound I have heard. He was also, and I mention this because Mr Gelhar isn't perhaps as well known on this forum as other players, a wonderful teacher and mentor. Happy memories indeed!

No problem!

I don't post on here often, but it's not everyday one of my old teachers is brought up.
I still remember the look of horror/amusement on his face when I turned up to the audition for the Hochschule in Koln, with a Besson 981....... It was explained to me, in a patient and very kind tone, that whilst it may have served John Fletcher well, and that he had no problem with me playing it in lessons, it wasn't quite the tuba of choice in Germany!
