What group is that? Sounds awesome!
I haven't seen a 5-valve PT-5 before. Is that original or added on later?

I agree! I love that horn. I love my 186-CC but the PT-5 just has such a great sound and fills any size room.tooba wrote:

The Lost Lady Found was a small group of brass and percussion from the University of Houston Wind Ensemble in 1997 at TMEA play as accompaniment for a choral group that was performing.bort wrote:What group is that? Sounds awesome!
Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 was the Texas Music Festival Orchestra at the Woodlands Pavillion.
Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks was the University of Houston Wind Ensemble
Very much original, other than the tuning slide being modified. This was also a prototype horn. As best as I can remember, the only one of these variants made.I haven't seen a 5-valve PT-5 before. Is that original or added on later?

If Jinbao, Wisemann, Eastman produced a PT-5(P) clone, it would likely sound better than the PT-6P clone, based on what I've heard/experienced so farbloke wrote:Has anyone played the Jinbao PT-5 ?
Does it have a 5th valve ?

Here are a couple shots showing the wrap. I wish I still had this one. It was velvety smooth and had tremendous volume. The main problem was that I had to lip up a lot with the tuning slide all the way in. Back in the pre internet days, the main advice I received was, sell it, get another horn that works..... They were the best pistons I ever played on.

^ I like that funky wrap of the old proto PT-5(P). Looks like the leadpipe was changed a couple times on that horn, from the time you owned it to it's current owner, ginnboonmiller.
I still have my old Custom Music catalogs/papers that feature the PT-5, along with the other models. Since the PT-5(P) was only a prototype model and never went into full production, I wonder how many were made
It's really interesting to see how prototypes vary compared to the later production models.....i.e.: the proto rotary M-W 2155, then the production piston 2155; the tall proto rotary PT-4, then the squat rotary & piston production PT-4(P), etc.

There is one picture of it in one of my old Custom Music catalogs. I can take a pic of it and send thru email if you want? Custom Music soon changed the pic to the squat production PT-4 in the next catalog. The proto PT-4 looks identical to this "PT-5" (which I believe to be a proto PT-4):bort wrote:Ooh... Bloke, didn't I call you out for trolling about the wrong PT-5, like, 8 years ago? I can't teach you anything.

Man, that's a good looking tuba. Now, I know how a tuba plays and how a tuba looks are totally different and unrelated, but still, by looks, I'd take that prototype over the squatty one any day.tooba wrote:There is one picture of it in one of my old Custom Music catalogs. I played a squatty PT-3 in college. Good tuba, but I never liked the way it looked. That's one good thing -- when you're playing it, you don't have to look at it!

Re: B&S PT-5. Know anything?
No need to apologize - that was possibly the worst trolly joke I've ever made, and I've made many. But, if you look at my ex-tuba, the valve section is uncannily ripped off from that york. That horn sounded really special.

I sat next to someone everyday for a year who played one of these. We played in band and brass ensemble, and the player also sounded good in orchestra. I liked the sound. It is a bigger tuba than you'd think- basically the same body size as a PT 6.

If I'm not mistaken, I've played two of them. And I liked/like them a LOT. Like 103s in BBb. Great sound and power, lots of character, and the pitch is very, very manageable.
