Lidl BBb from Thomann

Post by MoCoTubaBone »

I am considering buying a Lidl 701 BBb Tuba from Thomann of Europe: http://www.thomann.de/intl/josef_lidl_lbb701_bbtuba.htm. I was curious if others had purchased tubas from them (especially if they ordered this exact model) and could relate their ordering experiences. I have some trepidation about having an instrument shipped overseas but perhaps it wouldn’t be all that different ordering a horn from the west coast and having it ship (east coaster here).

I played a Lidl CC tuba recently and loved it but I prefer one in BBb. I assume they aren’t too dissimilar. Anyone have the BBb model?

Thanks for any advice!

More expensive, but in the US.

I saw what Horn Guys have but that $1000 price difference is the primary reason I am looking at Thomann. Just wanted to see what other's expereinces with Thomann have been like.

Call the Horn Guys. They don't update their site all that often, so maybe it's not the most accurate price. I guess it depends on how much *they* paid for it, so if you're looking to capitalize on the crashing Euro, yes, it might work better to buy in Germany. But once you factor in the shipping, duty fees, and anxiety, it might not be all that worth it. Give Steve a call and see what can be done.

I haven't bought any instruments from Thomann before, but have had some other minor dealings with them, all of which were just fine, and uneventful.

It may be about the same, after import duties etc, to get it from HornGuys, and you'd have the extra assurance that it was tried out a bit in their shop, too.

Thomann is OK for somebody distributing boxes. No testing. No setting up instruments.

OK Klaus, but the prices are accordingly.
However they market only wellknown makers whose products are well reputated and hopefully consistent.
They also give you 30 days for your approval and 3 years guarantee.

Which is OK, if you live within the EU, where shipping costs and red tape are manageable. Imagine the trouble of returning a tuba from the US to have a guarantee issue handled. The price difference will soon evaporate.
