Favorite Chris Olka recordings

Post by happyroman »

I have been out of the loop for a while, but have recently started practicing again. My renewed interest in the tuba has been extended to discovering and listening to some of the newer generation of tubists who are making their mark in the orchestral world. One of the players that I have recently been listening to is Chris Olka. I was hoping that my fellow TubeNetters could recommend some CDs by the Seattle Symphony that feature Chris performing the standard tuba repertoire, (or not so standard). Thanks!

In addition to the Seattle Symphony, check out the Cincinnati Symphony's Prokofiev 5 with Paavo Järvi conducting and Olka playing tuba. As a bonus, this CD also has Lieutenant Kije.

Also, the All-Star Orchestra, http://www.allstarorchestra.org/, has a low brass section that might get a few notes right. You should be able to watch the first season for free now.

All Star Orchestra has a few videos where they edit to focus on one particular section for their excerpts
Firebird-featuring Chris Olka

and here's an interview with him from the All Star Orchestra

He's also in this recording orchestra for the Legend of Zelda 25 anniversary CD

1:04 starts the tuba playing awesomeness,2:21 shows some great crescendos, and 3:06 is a good entrance, 4:07 with a low brass theme

2nd Zelda video

and if you didn't already see his Drill of the Week series on his own youtube channel. he's up to like number 13 now.

Here's number 1

I also have and like the Samuel Jones CD. Enjoy!
