With the recent acquisition of my new (to me) Rudy Meinl 5/4 CC, I thought I'd share some pictures of my (now) 3 Rudy tubas.

Well, I don't have a "favorite", per se. But, each one of them is very different, yet very similar at the same time. The 3/4 is great for all around stuff, it feels compact, and the sound is gorgeous. The 5/4 from what I have experienced so far feels like a nice big version of my 3/4. I was practicing the other day, and I actually made the walls in my apartment shake when I played some blastissimo notes. Of course, the F is the most amazingly colorful F tuba that I've ever come across, even with its German F tuba tendencies. I don't ever regret switching from my Yamaha 822 to the Rudy.

A little bit of a run on description, but there's just something special about these tubas.

Out of curiosity, who installed the main tuning slide stick? I have wanted to install one on my Rudy 5/4, but most of the repair guys I have asked are cautious because the two tubes on the main tuning slide are different diameters. Also, doe this one have any sort of spring loading device so that it would return to a "neutral" position after it is moved?

It reminds me of the period when Rex Martin was a sales rep for Rudy Meinl, back when the Euro/Dollar relationship was to our advantage. At one time he had two matched sets of Rudy's, one each in yellow and gold brass (F, 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4).

The tuning slide stick was installed by Osmun Music in Acton Massachusetts. I bought the horn from my teacher, who had the work done a year or so ago. According to him, the stick has made most of the tuning quirks (minor at worst) go away.

Also, there isn't a spring device to make it go back, but it doesn't necessarily drop all the way down if I let the stick go.

Nice, at one time I had a 3/4, 4/4 and 5/4 Rudy....wonderful tubas....I have since reduced it to my 4/4. Seems like it is the one that got the most playing time for what I am involved with. I do miss the 5/4 at time for the big orchestral pieces but it was a job to haul around....

Congratulations, Ben! Similar set to my 5/4 F, 3/4 CC and the 5/4 CC I used to have. Beautiful sound from all!!
