Unaccompanied Tuba Solos

Post by mbass »

I've played Robert Jager's Diverse Moments, but what are some other unaccompanied solos that are of good playing value?

Blue Grace by Claire Sievers is not commonly played, but I enjoy it. The range is playable by any key of tuba. There is a variety of rhythms and a couple of key changes.

Vincent Persichetti's Serenade No. 12 (I think that's it's official name) is good. I think Bob Spilman's 4 Greek Preludes may be unaccompanied, not 100% sure. Fun piece, odd rhythms and scales, can get a bit trite for my taste unless you just let go with the sonic olives and get into the spirit of the thing. Kraft's Encounters II, but it's meaner than cat dirt.

Encounters II by Kraft. It was written for Roger Bobo, and it's INSANE. I love it.

I like Impromptus by Muczynski. Also Fnugg by Baadsvik, Icon-sequenza by Bamert, Six Likes for Solo Tuba by Antoniou, Six pack by Meader. There are also some nice transcriptions. Bach Partita (Cooley) and the Teleman Flute Fantasies.

Theodore Antinou 6 Likes For Tuba. It's a 12/10. Very hard. Never been recorded but Mr. Bobo has performed it in the past. I have done select movements but have not done the whole thing yet.

There is also Persichetti's Parable for tuba solo.

I heard Mr. Bobo play one of the 6 Likes in concert back in the 1970s. The movement was titled "Like a Chicken," or something like that. More like a pterodactyl - absolutely frightening.

I am rather fond of Sonata Breve by Jack Gallagher. It is not very difficult and I think it is fun to play. Also, the Suite by Brian Israel is worth looking at. I played it on my senior recital. Brian Israel, who died too young, was a good friend of my composition teacher.

I really appreciate the input guys! All of this is great stuff, but it has dawned on me that I am WAY out of the loop on tuba lit. Note to self, never take five years off from tuba playing.
