It was a three valve horn and he added a valve. Large bell if I recall correctly. He's had this listed on and off Craigslist for years. When I first phoned about the horn, he made an anti-semitic comment. I told him his comment was offensive and decided not to deal with him.

That has to be the most bizarre thing I've ever heard on TubeNet.

More common than you'd think. Had a guy come over to buy a tuba stand I had posted. Same thing happened. Told him to leave my house! He was buying it for his daughter so I hope he explained to her why he came home empty-handed. Those were the only two occurences I've experienced when selling or buying instruments.

Well, there is a term for bargaining, that has been common in colloquial usage but could be considered anti-semitic. I'm not sure it's really anti-semitic, or pro-semitic, but if that's the offensive comment, then it could indeed be encountered fairly often.

Something that was done or said at the intro MUST have triggered their response, either way...it was strange and doesn't happen without a catalyst of some type? What did you say, wear or otherwise could have caused them to be mean towards you?
A catalyst is not always necessary, Greg. In any case, Donn hit the nail on the head. Donn, that particular phrase is never used in a pro-semitic context.

I don't think it was a hijack per se; just letting any potential buyers know what mindset they will be dealing with. More of a cautionary tale than a thread hijack.

I think you may be finding anti-semitism where it doesn't exist, though. I mean, the usage may be anti-semitic, but people who use it are mainly guilty of not having taken the trouble to iron the politically incorrect items out of their vocabulary. That makes them anti-semitic in only the most superficial sense, and you'd likely do more good by simply speaking to them about it.

I do, Donn: I take it as an opportunity to educate. that's the only way change might come into effect. However, having said that, it is my perogative to not deal with certain people if I choose not to. For instance, from the seller of this particular instrument there was no recognition that his remark was inappropriate, no apology, not even a "some of my best friends are..." excuse.

Found pictures that the seller sent me when he originally posted the horn in 2010.

I worked for many years for a Jewish man who speculated in real estate quite a bit. He would go out to make a deal and would say the seller was asking $XX, but he was "going to Christian him down."
