That horn looks like the size of the Piggy I have. What would you say are the similarities and differences(besides rotary & .835 bore on the Piggy).

Hey,
That is a Gnagey in the background. They are very close in design and feel. I've used my Gnagey a lot since 2007 playing lots of crazy long gigs in bars or weird places. The differences I found were that the Eastman played a little tighter in the mid and upper range and a little more open in the low range. That might be that my Gnagey has an older valve set, although the compression is still quite good and that the 5th seems to be a little bigger and on the other side of the main tuning slide.

My Gnagey has a York bell and a special sound and it was hard to me to tell if the Eastman would make that type of sound too. I'm a little torn if I should fix up my Gnagey a bit or sell it and get an Eastman. It's a super tough call for me.

okay, I'll bite. What are the improvements over the 56j that this horn has?

The valve section is set more into the body of the horn than the 56J. I remember the 56J being a sensation when it first came out but so many re-designed horns have some out since then it's no wonder Conn quit making them.

The engraving is done by machine and looks spectacular on the Shires trombones as well.

I played one of these at NAMM this year and was blown away. Wonderful horn.

I also had the pleasure of tooting on a prototype of a big German-style rotary BBb. Anyone else try that one? I'd have a hard time choosing between the two (very differen) horns.

The nimbleness of the horn matches that of Miraphone 1292. The low register and high register is effortless (especially compared to my past horns). I would recommend this tuba to anyone. Not to mention that for once when I had left Dillons, I didn't feel like I had left with a lesser quality horn after playing their stock of horns. I sincerely hope this horn takes off in the market. It deserves it.

You owe it to yourself as a tuba player to try these horns if you have not already.

Forgot to mention--Dillon Music--both Steve & Matt are there--have the new Eastman CC tuba at NERTEC ( amazing since they can't keep them in stock due to high sales)--if you're going to NERTEC-play the horn!!

Did anyone order the hard case available from Eastman with this horn? I'm receiving mine through Music and Arts, and our research department came back with an option to order a Eastman brand (forget the model) hard case with wheels. I went ahead with it so the tuba would be shipped with a case.

Any experiences with this case? Pictures?

Played on an Eastman BBb horn at CASMEC and was blown away. It was a 4/4 horn, and boy could that thing resonate. Their 3+1 compensating euph was pretty great too, for me it was a little better than an 842S. I really want to try out their CC tuba.

I played the Eastman with my local concert band Monday night. I usually play my Bruckner CC with that group. Here are a few observations.

The horn does play in tune better than any CC tuba I have ever played! My Bruckner is also very nice--intonation wise, but I do have to ride the 4th valve slide on it. The Eastman stays pretty much right where I want it without ANY slide pulling. E and Eb in the staff play open and 2nd valve respectfully, which I'll need to get used to (most CC tubas I've played lock in better with 1,2 and 2,3 respectively). The only alternate fingering needed is 3rd valve top-line A instead of 1,2. In the tuning setup I put it in, second-line Bb needs a little lip adjustment to lock in, but everything else is spot-on. It is very east to play!

The sound reminds me of my Yorkbrunner, albeit a bit smaller. It is buttery and warm, and for a "small" tuba, it puts out a good amount of volume. There is a surprising amount of dynamic room for a "smaller" tuba. I was especially impressed with the player feedback. In a VERY live room with a low ceiling, playing with a high school level group, I usually find it somewhat difficult to hear myself on the Bruckner. The Eastman is much easier to hear with all that noise going on. Probably because the HUGE bell is closer to my head. One can compare it to playing a balanced or a pocket trumpet compared to a regular sized trumpet. The closer the bell is to the ear, the better you hear what is really coming out of it. As a result of the feedback, I play better, and can get my sound closer to what I hear in my head.

The first valve sticks at times, despite trying to break it in every way I could here at home. I may have to bring it to my local shop when I get a chance. The valves overall are very good. This is just a slight deficiency that needs to be addressed. When I pull the valve in towards me, which I do naturally holding this instrument, it is slow to return to the open position. I'm guessing it's an easy fix. I hope it is...

I can't imagine a better all-around horn for the tubist. I still would like to produce a video review, and will post it here if I ever get around to it. I suspect that Eastman will have a lot of orders to fill in the coming months.

Glad you like your Eastman-amazing tubas. The pistons are very close tolerance--use a light oil to break them in.

I've been using UltraPure, which is the oil that shipped with the horn. I have some UltraPure light, and will give that a try. Thanks!

UltraPure is a great synthetic--Andreas Eastman Company, Monette, Adams, Packer, Willson, Thein, etc. all use it and endorse it.
For me and my body 'innards' , I just use a petroleum oil-Blue Juice...
