You could go to Northwestern or DePaul (or any number of other schools) and watch a wind ensemble or orchestra rehearsal.

I did this with a high school band once and while the students were definitely impressed by the musicianship and the pieces, they were REALLY blown away by how the director never once had to tell the ensemble to stop talking.

Truly amazing! Isn't it? I would like to witness something like this, myself. Those of us who work with middle & high school students know that talking is a basic right of kids in America. They should be permitted to talk anytime & everytime they wish to do so. I think this is guaranteed in the Constitution. Or at least it must be!

If the timing fits with your Chicago itinerary, your students will enjoy this:

Chicago Brass Band is performing a concert in the College Church Artist Series
with organist Beth Naegele, Professor of Organ at Moody Bible Institute
on Sunday May 22, at 4:00 p.m.
The location is College Church, 332 E. Seminary Ave. Wheaton, IL (a western suburb of Chicago)

The program will include Pines of the Appian Way (Finale) from The Pines of Rome by Respighi and the Finale from the Symphony No. 3 (Organ) by Saint-SaÃ«ns.

Admission is free (free will offering)

If your trip bring's you any where near Campaign IL you could stop at the John Philip Sousa museum http://www.library.uiuc.edu/sousa/ on the U of I campus.

Instruments being made in Chicago that I know of:

1. Schilke, already mentioned

2. Ludwig, part of UMI, has a percussion factory in the area

3. Lyon & Healy still makes harps just west of downtown, and they have factory tours

4. Richard Brune makes guitars in Evanston, not really a "factory" per se

There are other small makers of things around, like clarinet barrels and such. Good luck.
