Recording of best bass trombone sound you've heard?

Post by vd8m9 »

By best I mean just really good, or one of the best. Not definitive best. There's a monster sound here

And then there's this one, probably not comparative to the best, but really really scary good for an all state group. http://youtu.be/-aAPqNIF_4w" target="_blank

What else? :D

Ok this isn't only the best bass trombone, but the best (well, epic) brass recording, ever. Props to Jeannie Little on 3rd trombone and Vernon on bass.

Devil's Waltz, Martin Schippers & Tomer Maschkowski

Know nothing about these guys. If blatting is what it's about, hang in there, he gives it some pretty good toots - like going into 2:00 - but where it happens for me is, for example, in a brief melodic phrase right after that.

I'm happy you mentioned that recording (probably the best of the piece). I heard the Minnesota Orchestra play this in 2012 and I could tell the low brass were trying to duplicate what the CSO guys did on that recording. I think they came pretty close. They had a bass trombonist named David Herring who could REALLY lay it out there.

I had the great pleasure of hearing the CSO do this live last year...greatest thing I've ever heard live or recorded. I really hoped they were going to release that recording on their label.

And yes, Gene was playing a BBb.

in that very same CD, there's another CSO Bernstein recording of Shostakovich 8, and the low Eb in the middle of the last movement is unbelievable.

Leave it to you to find this. I've never heard my bass trombone hero in that context. Thanks for sharing.

Shostakovich 8 CSO and Bernstein? I am unaware of that recording. I thought it was the Symphony #1 that came with the Symphony 7 with Bernstein/CSO? Solti did a Shostakovich 8 with the CSO around the same time, however, and it is incredible!
