Festival Music for the City of Vienna [Festmusik der Stadt Wien], by Richard Strauss, written 1943 for a large brass ensemble. He modified it for a smaller group and named it Fanfare der Stadt Wien.
The reason I am asking about this is that I heard a recording on PBS of the Marine Band under Bougoise ]sp?] and enjoyed it immensely. The CD is POP, no longer available, called The Marine Band plays R Strauss, or something like that. I would like to get a copy of the CD, and ultimately, find the arrangement and give it a try with a 20-piece brass ensemble.

The brass choir from the Naden Band of the Canadian Navy played this in their featured guest performance at the Ladner Band Festival. Great performance, as usual.

Philip Jones recorded the Fanfare, but the Locke Brass Consort beat them to the punch for the first commercial recording of the full Festmusik. The PJBE recording of the original work followed a year or so later, IIRC.

Thanks, Hal! I just now found that info on Boosey-Hawkes. They also carry the fanfare [3 minutes] version Strauss did right after the premiere of that 11 minute version, for brass band. There is no information whether this is British brassband or the German; that makes a difference if I have to transcribe all of it or not in order for us to play it. Nor does it provide instrumentation for the shorter version. I hate to spend that kind of money only to have it be useless!
Pepper also has it, but at a much higher price.

Somewhere I have (I think) a full version of the piece by PJBE on CD, but the copy I have on my iTunes only has the fanfare, so I couldn't post a link. Amazon might have the full version from the PJBE if you want to check.

As for the sheet music, B&H sells a separate arrangement for "brass band" -- my guess is that version is indeed for British brass band while the other is for non-British (is that a term?) brass band. I'd ask B&H before you buy anything.

The original piece uses, I think, 10 trumpets, 7 trombones, 2 tubas and tympani. Brass band version will get it closer to what we commonly use. Otherwise, it is an awful lot of re-arranging of parts.
I did send them an e-mail asking about this, but who knows when I will hear back. Thanks again for your help!

The Fanfare from the "Festmusik der Stadt Wien" is somewhat different. I have a slight preference for this because it begins with the tubas!

Thanks for the link. I've saved the score, and - some night - I'm going to see (and it looks as if "yes") most everything can be covered by a standard symphony orchestra brass section.

I'll let you know! I have ordered the Fanfare [short]version [This is NOT available on IMSLP due to copyright; his link is for another, earlier work.] and it should be here within a week. I will try to distill it down to a size we can use: 5-5-6-1-2+ perc. We'll see how it goes!
Looks like a fun project on a terrific piece.

The "Short" version has an almost corny cut in it, which you might not notice if you aren't very familiar with the full version. I urge every living brass player to listen to the Locke recording at least 15 times... you'll hear more ever time. It's one of the most exceptional, complex, incredible works ever written for brass. And the tuba part is sparse... making it that much more amazing, important, and lovely!

It's a poly-choral work... if I remember correctly, it's partially an homage to Gabrieli-style writing.
