Quite possibly this is a land line. They did specify that you should call...

Hi-
I just called the number. Spoke to a very nice older gentleman who due to age/health, can't continue to play the tuba. It is his horn. Horn does indeed play AND it is still available!! If I lived close to NYC, I would go over and get it!
Good luck!

If I were interested (and I'm not), and assuming it's in good playing condition, I would offer him more than his asking price.

Would probably be a killer horn for 1000. Drop 500 with Matt Walters to service/tweak.

But if you call Matt in July with a big project like this, be prepared to WAIT! :D

Received tuba today. Got some damage in transport but it plays amazing! I'm not your pro player, just easy Dixieland and oompah type of playing but I haven't played anything that's so free blowing and slots so easy. Engraving states: Kalashen's Kaiser Model New York 1940. Assuming that's serial number that should placed it before 1905. Not sure where this website takes its estimates but that's where I got serial and years estimates: http://simonettitubacollection.com/inst ... /kalashen/

Thank you to OP who always finds something cool, it's usually out if my reach but since this one was so cheap I decided to take a risk and buy it unseen.
Who's the maker of this one? Cerveny, B&F?

It has some things that would need to be addressed and here are some photos. Any suggestions on possible rotor action assembly replacement? Rotors look like it's from the early 1900's, bell has some tears.

Take it to a reputable shop, set a budget, and have as much done as possible. Always start with a cleaning and go from there.

If you do decide to replace the valve linkages, have it done right, and don't slap on some cheap Chinese parts. Hopefully the bell isn't too bad, and there is still a lot of life left in this old tuba!

I guess that's what the most fascinating to me about this tuba. I had 4/4 size Miraphones, Cervenys but this loud woofy dark rumble is something I've been looking for all my life :D

Congratulations on a really nice find!

The springs are fascinating. It looks like it has the gears for the thumbscrew adjustable clock springs, but thumb screws are gone and someone has squeezed in more ordinary springs to serve. And yeah, the compressed spring for water key is unusual too!

That instrument has a lot of character.

Play your heart out on it!

And thanks for posting the schneideruwe.de link, as it might prove useful to me!
Thanks for playing!
