Went to the hirsbrunner factory today. Got all the parts I need to build my 5 valve 6/4 York/hirsbrunner BBb tuba. Plus I'm going to dinner with Peter tonight. Been a good trip to Switzerland so for.

School starts today in Cobb County, Georgia. More traffic on the roads, watch for school zone speed limits.

Are we the first?

That's ludicrous. I never had to start before Labor Day, from Kindergarten through college. In fact, my college right now is required by law to never start classes before Labor Day (since campus grounds are needed for the Minnesota State Fair, it would be logistically impossible to have class and the State Fair concurrently). The last day for the State Fair is Labor Day, so class starts the next day.

In Cobb County Georgia there are 5 weeks of vacation scattered throughout the school year. With that much vacation there is no way to get it all in unless you start the first week of August. The school bus traffic is awful during morning rush, but all the kids are back home by 5PM. Everyone rides the bus, even kids 3 blocks from school.

Who do you blame when your kid is a brat
Pampered and spoiled like a siamese cat
Blaming the kids is a lie and a shame
You know exactly who's to blame
The mother and the father
Father??

For those not familiar, this pattern dates back to when America was mostly agricultural, and kids were needed to help on the family farm during the summer. There are still parts of the country where this makes sense, but not in major metropolitan areas, or in non- "family" farming.

Further, it has been shown that when kids are out of school that long, they tend to forget some of what they learned.

I've read that in countries where the long summer break is not used, but the fall, winter and spring breaks are a bit longer so there is roughly the same amount of vacation time, kids tend to do better in school.

Is it true that the juvenile detention centers in Baltimore have been re-named "Summer job mentoring stations??"

Well, they just announced that Boss Hog is going to close the Baltimore City Detention Center- you know, the one where one particular inmate knocked up several female correctional officers. AFAIK no word on where they will house all those criminals........

Actually, it would be better if they did all ride the bus. Too many parents drive their kids to school, causing traffic jams around the schools.

Also, Atlanta Public Schools starts today. Fulton County, what isn't Atlanta, starts next Monday.

It used to be that school got out late enough in May here that my kids would sometimes miss the start of Drum Corps all-days. Now I'm glad we don't have any to have to worry about them missing the first week of school to finish up the drum corps season.

But if you go back long enough, school used to get out in early June.

But if you go back long enough, when I was a kid, we used to have to walk 3 miles to school and 3 miles home and it was all uphill both ways.

Dodging dinosaurs, too. And snow up to your ears. Before global warming.

But we learned to add and subtract well enough to get us into college. (Or is that kollij, koledge, collije?) But anyway, we got edjookated.

Those last few updates are maybe a little old news. Maybe I should call them uplates.

I've heard that some schools are designated "peanut-free zones." I love peanuts, and I think this is a tragedy for the mainstay of school lunches, the PBJ. I feel sorry for the kids who are allergic to peanuts.

My wife and I don't know what we would do if that's in our kid's school. Send him in with some other nut butter (almond butter, which BTW is delicious but expensive), and risk that some uppity lunch monitor would throw it away?

At any rate, I would stand on the very edge of the border of school property and gorge myself on peanuts and make a big damn scene of it. I have a feeling I'm going to be one of those parents who thinks their kid's school is full of ridiculous rules and policies...

Absolutely agreed. I am sorry for those that have allergies like that, but it is not fair to the other 99% of the population to make them suffer. My little girl loves PB&J and I should not have to make her miss out because of it. It also upset me as a teacher when I had a hankering for a good ole PB&J that I couldn't even have it in my own office or in the faculty lounge.
