offer on Ebay was accepted

Post by sousaphone68 »

I made a speculative offer on a tuba on ebay and to my suprise it was accepted.
I am now the awaiting delivery of this tuba.
The bell I think has a presentation engraving on it or can anyone tell me about a maker called M Wendler Duisburg.
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.

Don't know who Herr Wendler was, but I'd say he was the manufacturer. Placing the manufacturer's name on the bell kranz was common on German tubas, as we see on Alexanders.

Duisburg is a city in the Ruhr area of western Germany, located near Essen and Dusseldorf but quite a distance from Mainz.

I think Herr Wendler may be a music shop a knowledgeable member has suggested on another site that the tuba maybe of Czech origin.
It is coming from Russia and hopefully if it survives the trip I will find some makers mark on the tuba.

The New Langwill Index lists Moritz Wendler as having been born in Marckenkirchen in 1869, active as a brass instrument maker in Bromberg c1894-c1921 and then working in Dinsburg 1921-p1934. There does exist a 1934 catalog somewhere...

I asked a question about it then lost interest. 39.5" tall, 34 cm bell (13.38"), 15 mm bore (.590"). It could sound great, who knows.

It hasn't arrived yet but here are some pictures from the listing.
Any more suggestions for its origin?

There is no location Dinsburg in Germany. I think Dinsburg should be Duisburg.

That's what the New Langwill index claimed.
I thought it sounded weird, but went with the Index...

It arrived today :D
The packaging was not done well and it has arrived with a creased bell and a damaged paddle deck

It plays with a nice tone but not in tune with its self due to the valve cluster being a home built graft.

It looks like it was an army tuba as there is an engraving on the krantz
