Here's the instrument I'm trying to gather some information about. It's clearly marked "Made in Western Germany" and bears all of the earmarks of a horn that was possibly made in the mid-sixties. However... the horn seems near-new in terms of the lacquer and cleanliness on the inside. There were some serious problems with dents and the horn may have been stored for a long time. There no model or serial numbers on the horn. ... only a #15 build number on the linkage and valve components. .718" bore. 16 3/4" bell. I've emailed B & M.

I think "Melton" still can make F and Bb helicons. I'm probably confused by the Meinl family, I think that's Meinl-Weston but whatever - in the comments with this very listenable video of Trygve Madsen, Sonata, Op 34, the player says something about his F helicon, and I bet his other helicon is of similar provenance.

Not that it has anything to do with the present horn, unless there's a family relationship.

The horn plays well and has a very tight focused timbre. The lower register tends to be a little sharp... typical. The 4th valve plays very sharp when used in place of 1-3... especially on a low C.

Yes, I saw a young man (maybe 20 year old) who owns a Fafner bell helicon which made by Meinl-Weston on Facebook , but can't remember his name .

Another useful source is the Forum at the website of the Musikinstrumentenmuseum at Markneukirchen. Especially Mr. Weller (father and son, who both work for the museum) are very keen to answer questions about the history of instrument making in Germany.

I've learned that the B & M helicon was purchased new in 1985.... making it much newer than one might conclude from te fact that it has clockspring rotor mechanisms.
