Acne on chops

Post by burningchrome »

So, I've been playing for sixteen years on a Monette 94, and in the past year I keep having outbreaks of acne on my lower lip right where my mouthpiece sits. It comes and goes, but it's no fun. Washing my face after every playing session and my wife's acne creams don't work. Does anyone else have experience with this? Would changing to Stainless Steel make a difference vs gold? What SS mouthpiece is similar to a Monette 94?

Thanks wisdom of TubeNet.

Have you tried washing and cleaning your mouthpiece?

I developed a similar problem after using a gold plated mouthpiece for a few years. I switched to stainless steel and the problem went away and hasn't returned. You could also try replating your current mouthpiece to see if that works.

From my experience this usually pops up when the plating on the mouthpiece is wearing thin, so your skin is having a reaction to the raw brass that's starting to come into contact with your lips. Could be easiest to just have your mouthpiece replated and see if it goes away. That's cheaper than buying a new mouthpiece that you potentially don't like as much as your current one.

Id guess too that it's a reaction to brass under the gold plate. Replate, rebuy or go stainless.

I agree. Time to replate or go stainless. You may want to consider not shaving that portion of your face to see if that helps. That is what I did years ago. No problem since then.
