Curiosity has been killing this cat, so yesterday I made the four-hours-one-way trip to Wessex Tubas in Ferrysburg, MI to check out some of the low brass horns they offer. Andy Loree was a good host while I was there, and had a nice selection of horns out to try.
For Tubas, I was most impressed with their big Michigan (4 piston, 1 rotor) and new Luzern (5 rotor) BBbs. I'd love to have a Michigan especially, since I prefer piston horns. I was also very impressed with their Dolce Euphonium. That would be first on my list given my playing needs, and a big step up from my present Euphonium for a great price.
Then there's the Eb Cimbasso I got to try - now I know why so many people on here love them (I'd never played one before). That one is really nice, and left me wanting to try their F model, which unfortunately Andy didn't have on hand yesterday. I'm definitely going to add a Cimbasso to my arsenal - my wife knows it's in our future!
Andy, thanks again for your time yesterday - I really appreciate it. I'm very impressed with the quality of Wessex's horns, and will certainly consider buying instruments from your company. It was great getting to meet you.

No, I'd didn't get to try the new XL model. The only other Tubas I tried were a four piston BBb and a BBb shoulder Contra. There was a four piston Eb Sousaphone out also, but I didn't try it. I'm not in the market for one for those.
