You have to be a bit adaptable to play tuba in Minnesota. I will march in the St. Paul Winter Carnival Parades in a couple of weeks. Typically it's a bit nippy out and the wind through the streets of St. Paul is imposing. Yes, I have a plastic rimmed mouthpiece. I think a little antifreeze in the valves will be useful. All in all, it is a test of resolve and survival. Sometimes we even play music!

Ah Yes !!! St. Paul (Minnesota) Winter Carnival is coming up. Temperatures are rising. It's up to - 5 at the moment in the southern suburbs. Almost getting tropical. My heart goes out to my friends who will be 'tubing' in the parade. Fortunately, (and you can hate me) I will be sitting in a nice warm spot in the Landmark Center playing Strauss, Mendelssohn, Prokoffiev and company in the back row of the St. Paul Civic Symphony with a nice comfy F tuba on my lap. On the ophecleide parts in Mendelssohn, I will however use a Wedge SJ Solo mp that Dave Harrison spun out of black Delrin for me. Not that it will be freezing indoors, but the Delrin, being less dense, seems to help getting a little closer to that certain 'wispy' and delicate timber of the ophicleide. It's probably a bit ironic that we are programming the indidental music from "Midsummer Night's Dream." January is more like "Midwinter Nightmare." I'll use the nice and heavy Monette 94 Prana, with the CC BAT for the Prokoffiev "Winter Holiday." (3PM, Sunday, Jan. 31)
