Suggestions for a Field Repair Kit

Hello everyone!

I am on the verge of joining a drum and bugle corps where I will be marching a contrabass bugle (the genuine kind in GG!). I will also be in charge of doing field repairs while we're practing and while on the road. I have started making a list of things I should have in my toolbox, and I was wondering if you all could suggest anything I might be overlooking.

Soldering:
torch
solder
flux (cream AND liquid?)
rubbing alcohol
steel wool
solder scraper
extra butane
clamps
spray bottle

Hammers:
wooden mallet
small metal dent hammer
rawhide mallet

Pliers:
channel locks
needle-nose
regular pliers

Valves:
valve oil
corks
felts
valve gage

Miscellaneous:
mouthpiece remover
mouthpiece shank re-rounder
rags
slide grease
water key corks
heat resistant work mat

Screw drivers (phillips and standard)
Hex (Allen) wrench (metric and standard)
Brasso (for a light lap on a sticky valve)
Silver polish (for a nice cleanup after soldering on a silver horn)
Steel utility wire (for binding joints together while soldering.)
Cleaning rods

Cable ties
Twisties
Duct tape!!!!!!!!!!

A little handheld dremel would be helpful.

Nice! Who are you marching with? Also what horns are you guys using? I marched on a Kanstul for a few seasons.


If you are using a kanstul, the braces for the screw that attach the bell will most likely come off over the season, along with the bar across the lead pipe. Having something handy to roll out the bell would be great, I was taught to using a towel and drum stick. Bring a box of assorted springs if you are going to be fixing horns also.

Thanks for the suggestions! I may be marching with a small corps out of Columbus, Ohio. They're called the Saints. Now I need to go about acquiring all of these tools. As of now, I have a torch and a small screwdriver set.

If you don't already have a pocket knife, some kind of knife.

If these horns and the older 1 piston and one rotary valve type, there are a number of small screws involved in the rotary mechanisms, I carry a few spare screws in my case for my rotary valve Tuba. The screws occasionally will work loose and fall out if you don't check them regularly, so having some spare screws would be helpful.

Thanks again for all the suggestions! Now on to my next question, what is the best way to purchase these tools? Is there a more cost-effective way than going out to a retail store or buying from Allied?
