Triton Takes Silver in Lyon

Post by Jobey Wilson »

Whew...love this jetlag...
The Triton Brass Quintet was awarded the Silver Medal at the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition in Lyon, France. This competition stemmed out of the Narbonne Competition that went defunct a few years ago. 10 brass quintets were invited to the prelims; 3 French, 2 English, 2 Swiss, 1 German, 1 Spanish, and Triton.
Prelims: 1 choice (we played a Monteverdi madrigal)
Jean Bellon Quintet; Mvt 1
David Walters "Nabra"
Triton Brass (USA), Or Notes (FR), Feeling Brass (FR), and 1 English group (forgetting name in my sleepiness) advance.

Semi's: All choose you own...20-30 minutes. Triton was asked if we could possibly add another 15-20 for our program. Feeling up to the challenge, we get the Etler and Armenian Scenes faxed to us from the US the morning of the semi's (last time we played either was in the finals of Fischoff 2003). New program: Arutunian "Armenian Scenes" Mvt 1 & 3
Tim Pence "In the Monkey Brain" (2003 for TBQ)
Etler Quintet, Mvt 1
Granados "Oriental"

Finals: choose 10 minutes- Montiverdi Madrigal Suite
required- Toccata & Fugue d minor
Gregson Quintet
Beytelmann "All Lose, Whole Find" (commissioned for the competition)

1st prize: Or Notes...Paris, France
2nd prize: Triton Brass Quintet...Boston, MA USA
3rd prize: Feeling Brass...France

In the next week or so, we will have a full travel logue on our website.

Congratulations on your placement. I'm sure there is prestige in this competition.

Best of luck in future endeavors.
