You should talk to TheBerlinerTuba, and see what he's got over in Berlin. I'd bet you would have more luck finding one over there than here. Not to mention, Berlin is an amazing city to visit, and worth it whether you buy a tuba or not.

If you want a vintage 6v Symphonie F bad enough you might as well just buy that one. That's a "good" deal compared to the sky-high price bloke sold one for recently...

Yeah, but then you get that one that sold here for $3,000 (might have been 5v) or whatever a few weeks before Joe's sold. I'd expect to see them in the $5,000-range. I'm no expert for why Joe's was so expensive, but it sold VERY quickly, so clearly there were 2 people who thought it was the right price.

Any way you look at it, it's still an old F tuba, and unless it's like new, I think spending like-new money for it isn't the best idea.

That is, at what point does a vintage great playing tuba command MORE than normal market value for a used tuba? I'm not sure how to answer that, nor do I think there is an answer. But I don't think the price for these, no matter how good, necessarily has to be very high.

The $8,000 one might be completely worth it in every way. But there *are* symphonie tubas (maybe not 6v or with kranz, or the leprechaun/unicorn delivery method) that DO come up for a LOT less than $8,000. Just depends on how long you want to wait.

I am the new owner of the Symphony model that bloke was selling. I currently own a 5v symohony in regular brass and i will say these are the best f tubas ever made. The 6v gold brass model i bought from Joe is like a brand new tuba. The quality of the overhaul that was done on the body was amazing. The horn can easily pass for brand new. My decision to buy it was based of my experience of the one i currently own. Gold brass adds a new dimension to the sound and this was no exception.

There are several things these older models B&S f tubas bring to the table that the newer models dont, the sound, pitch and amazing upper register. The newer models are larger in both the bell and body as well as the bore in the first 3 valves. With the older models, all valves are truely tapered and each valve is a different size. With thw valve combinations offered on the older hand made model along with the bell and body size differences make these sound more like a larger version of the Alex F tuba.

After seeing the horn in person, i can say it was better than expected even though it looked great in the pics. When i say its like a brand new tuba, it is shocking to see how well the craftsmanship was done by whomever did it. There is not even a scratch on it. Playing this compared to my other B&S is a real treat. Until this horn came around i thought i had the best B&S f tuba ever made. Horns like this are rare, although the repair guy in Germany makes one think they aren't. In my lifetime i have only seen one other, the other belongs to Chester Schmitz. Are these better than current new model f tubas? In some ways i definitely think so. Was it worth the lofty price tag? Most definitely. Is there another new model f tuba i would spend this kind of money on? No way.

That's what I always thought too, but clearly it's just a guess. Why would the Germans want to export their best stuff?

Similarly, IF there were anything vintage and American-made that the Germans might find desirable, I'd expect it to be harder to find there than here. Frankly though, I'm not sure what that might be, and why they'd want any of our stuff. It's made well enough, but the style is all wrong.

I played a brand new 3100 recently. It sounded beautiful, had great intonation, and offered an easy high register. The build and allignments appeared to be top notch, at a higher level than I had previously seen from B&S.

Aside from being new, wouldn't a 3100 be the same specs as a symphony?
