Largest mouthpiece for small shank euphonium?

I'm using a 51D with my Yamaha YEP-321 but want to get a darker sound, like the 4AL/Besson 765 that sits next to me.

Large euphonium mouthpieces seem less common with the small shank. The largest I can find is the SM4-baritone, which is 26mm ID and 7.38mm bore.

Does anyone know of other larger mouthpieces available in small shank?

there's always doug elliot, or you could get the reciever replaced with a large shank one from a weril or something.

Schilke makes the 52E2 which is a good bit bigger/deeper than the 51D.

I got a good chuckle, Weril receiver..... should have got the Weril in the first place.....

I was a bit confused by the Denis Wick "Y", the description in the literature was wierd, fits Yamahas and some others (or something like that). So you're saying Denis Wick "Y" is small shank?

Schilke 52E2, yes..., does anyone know the bore size for this one? Is the cup bigger/deeper/more funnel shapped than the SM4 or 4AY?

Is it a three way tie for largest small shank, SM4, 4AY and 52E2 being pretty much equivalents?

I'm pretty sure that the rim of the 52E2 is thinner than the 51D.

I used a 52E2 when I played 321 back in the 1980s, and I found it to be a very good match, for me, of mouthpiece to horn. It's wider, deeper and has a more narrow rim than the 51D.

I use a 52D on my King American Style Eupg with small reciever. Its the biggest "non-fancy" mouthpiece I've found.

Could it also be that the other euphonium player has a darker sound?

Not to say there's no point in changing MP's to try and help that, I know I've done that many times over, but maybe have the other player blow on your horn a bit and see if it's the equiptment or the player.

Well he's got a bigger mouthpiece and a larger bore horn, I would expect a darker sound.

I figure just get the biggest mouthpiece that will fit my horn and live with it from there.... perhaps after a few years I'll feel my playing ability is deserving of a higher end/larger bore horn.

That's true, although Bessons usually have a brighter sound. It could be that we're thinking about "darker" sound in different terms. I think a larger Wick MP might give you a bigger and deeper sound, however it also has less metal around it so (in my ears) it gives it a bright quality as well. I would probably recommend either a heavy weight Wick or the Schilke 52E2 since Schilkes are generally heavier. Or better yet, try your best to play a few (you can order them from WWBW and have a couple weeks to try them before returning them) and see what you like better. Good luck!

Here's my reason for wanting to try a bigger/darker mouthpiece. I was practicing with the 51D (my standard) and the higher notes were getting more difficult to hit, usually a cue to stop playing. But, I wanted to continue, so I thought to myself, maybe the high notes will be easier with the 48 mouthpiece and I can continue playing.... Well the high notes were _slightly_ easier but the difference in sound reminded me why I use the 51D. I really don't like the sound with the 48 in comparison to the 51D. So, I was thinking, if 48 is not so good, and 51D is much better, would even bigger be even better? Got to give it a try.

It has crossed my mind that the sound should match the music. The band I'm in plays a lot of marches, so perhaps a more brassy sound is appropriate. But, I feel my sound doesn't blend into the entire band enough, perhaps I just need to bring my dynamics down a bit. I also figure a darker sound will blend better into the sound of the entire band.

So, the SM4-baritone is on order, maybe it will be too dark, maybe I'll love it....

I don't play euph often, and when I do, it is mostly Tubachristmas time. I play Bass trombone a lot.
I had a repair pro cut a Faxx 1.5 down to a small shank on his lathe. It works for me. Cheap too.
