I've always thought a piece by Danny Elfman could be pretty cool.

I would love to see something from Karel Husa, Michael Colgrass, or possibly Joseph Turrin. David Amram or Fisher Tull (did he do something already?) would be great too. I realize that you think of these composers in terms of wind ensembles more often than anything else, but that seems to be where the real modern compositions are coming from these days. Knowing some of their music, I know these composers understand the tuba better than most.

Film composers could be a good option also! Elfman is a cool idea. I think Elliot Goldenthal could put out something great also. Too bad Jerry Goldsmith is gone...

As far as format goes, I think the tuba needs to come out of the piano and wind ensemble closet a little more - something with full orchestra. Or maybe a large-ish string ensemble. Or harps - lots of them. Didn't Norlan Bewley write a piece for two tubas and eight harps? Add Norlan to my list also!

flea from the red hot chilli peppers
he was a high school prodigy trumpet player before he switched to bass, and he now owns a music school in cali.
he utalizes complexity and melody to form memorable but original lines.

A couple I'd love to see write a piece for tuba and various ensemble...

George Duke...amazing jazz pianist; played with Frank Zappa, Cannonball Adderly among thousands of others.

Stanley Clarke...he's a wicked bass player and film score composer.

Stewart Copeland...I'm not sure what it would sound like, but it would probably be pretty cool.
