Well gosh. All I have to report is one of my sons got married today. And I don't know if I will ever be able to post pictures. (Techno-backwardness on my part.)

Other good news about my son's wedding is that my younger brother who nearly died earlier this year with perforated intestines and some sort of lymphoma, I think it was, drove over from Arkansas for the wedding by himself, and back again. We are thankful for his recovery. And for all the good wishes that were expressed here at the time.

I have pictures on my phone, but it doesn't play well with the computer. I did once, somewhere, sometime, post a picture from my phone to a bulletin board. I might could try it again.

Thanks to all.

Great idea - is the sheet metal aluminum?

The rear of my house has direct southern exposure, and I know first-hand how much power the sun has to degrade painted natural materials.

As they say, "vinyl is final"....

BTW, I think my next roof (in about 8 years or so) will also be metal.....

(I know you aren't using vinyl, but it's the same principle...)

We had to replace a couple of windows in a rotted wall when we moved in, and they came with green painted (or more likely anodized) exterior, over pine frame. Still looks fine.

That and the doors is the only paint left back there. I hate paint - it's supposed to protect the wood, but after a couple years the surface breaks and the rain gets in, and then the paint just keeps the wood from drying out.

bloke wrote:I've found a talented/skilled man to cover all of the evergreen-painted trim around all the windows (which matches the evergreen metal roof) with factory-painted evergreen-colored sheet metal. Being a log house - and some 30-degree (diagonal) trim, there are quite a few hand-done "scoop" cuts. I told him he didn't have to go to that much trouble, but he assured me that he could, and that I would be pleased.

Even with detailed prep, expensive recommended primers, and and expensive recommended paints, the sun (after a few months) would begin peeling the paint from the trim.
A good cap job, well-caulked and applied, will always help out with the maintenance of a house. However, don't be surprised to find that after several years the capping will also start to fade a bit. The darker the color, the more brutal is the damage from a southern exposure. Aluminum or vinyl capping are a lot better than paint. Ask about PVC: more expensive, but should hold up much longer.

I dug my pre-lit ten-footer out from under the staircase this morning. I bought it as a post-season closeout about twenty years ago. I go through the ritual of replacing burned-out lights on it at the beginning of each Christmas season. This time I put in 99 new bulbs. This tree must have at least 4,000 lights on it!

I gave up and had our house painted the color it faded too instead of the color it faded from!!

Yes, and it seems to arrive earlier every year.

All this, considering Christmas doesn't actually start until December 25, and doesn't end until January 6.

However, Advent arrived (yesterday) right on time this year

I've been spending too many hours looking for a nice pair of over-the-ear wireless headphones and I am still no closer to making a decision.

My mother is going into hospice today, probably. Thursday, Thanksgiving day, was her 91st birthday. I will be traveling to northwest Illinois soon.
