Wow! It looks very similar to one that I owned back in the 80's. I bought mine from a woman who's husband owned it and who was killed in a car accident. She had it sitting in her attic for years, and through word of mouth, I found out about it and that she was looking to sell it. Mine was a 4 valve instrument where the 4th valve was a 1+2 combination. I had Chuck McAlexander add tubing to make it a 1+3 combo. It played very well, but I eventually sold it to fund another tuba. It's on the Wall of Fame at Dillon's with the guy I sold it to.

Yes guys, that's the way it was, as I remember it. It didn't seem to phase me at the time that 1+2 was actually 3. It is possible that it was a 2+3 combo? Now, you have me thinking about this. I know it wasn't a traditional 1+3 set up. Or, perhaps it was a flat 1 combo, like some of the older Miraphone 5th valve set ups, and I took it to be a 1+2 combo? Something like that anyway, but I had it changed to a 1+3, traditional 4th valve set up.

It turns out to be fairly easy to get accustomed to "odd" sytems on older tubas. I have one that has the fourth valve tuned as 2 + 3, while the fifth (operated, by the way, with the left hand little finger) is the 1 + 3 set up most of us now expect from the fourth valve. It works fine, and I do not have to concentrate on the difference too much when playing.

Not to get confused here, but what ever the fourth valve did originally isn't the way it is now. It is set up like a regular fourth valve.

I remember seeing this horn when you posted it a couple year ago and was actually just wondering what happened to it recently. I wanted it then, and I want it now (there's just something about it that says COOL!), but alas, I have no money for a new horn....
