Hirsbrunner Eb?

Post by Will Jones »

This looks like an interesting horn for a euphonium player like me (with the fourth valve in the correct spot).

Anybody have any experience with these Hirsbrunner Ebs?

Not personally, but I've talked to an owner in Melbourne (Aus) who is a euphonium player and he loves it for the reasons you mention.

Apparently they have a beautiful singing sound in the normal and high range, but not a powerhouse low register. A lovely horn if that's what you're looking for!

This question is probably sacrilege for many (bracing for the flames)... how difficult would it be reconfigure the valves 4 in a row?

And if I survive that question... what about a 4 + 1 config? (flat whole step +1 in left or right hand).

I imagine the answer to my question is "less than buying a Wessex Danube" (which I'm eyeing). But I am deeply curious.

Being a euphonium player that might play to my strengths!

Having seen a six valve Alex be rearranged from 3+3 to 2+4, I know it's do-able, but the $$ in the end might be interesting....
