Baer MMVI Signature Mouthpiece Fit

Post by Voisi1ev »

Ordered through from WW/BW through Amazon.

Sits a little lose in my 52J leadpipe?

I was sent a Euro Shank right?

Unless there is something I'm missing... NO. Euro would be bigger and would barely fit.

I don't know much (read:anything) about 52J idiosyncrasies, but maybe take a real close look at your lead pipe for anything that looks out of sorts?

Unless it is stamped "EURO" on the cup, then it should be standard/American.

With that said, I have noticed some of the GW mouthpieces (though not the Baer ones) having American shanks that were smaller than that of other makers.

Fits a little more snug in a 186. Just as loose in a 2341( which of course is like the same horn as my 52J). Guess I'm returning it.

To be more specific, in my 52J is goes all the way in to the throat and rattles a bit, would fall right out if I tipped it.

I wonder if a Euro Shank would fit then if the standard is too small?

Ask someone who knows more (aka a tech), but something like this might help: http://www.dillonmusic.com/p-3818-josef ... -tuba.aspx" target="_blank

The 52J has something of an in-between sized receiver. No clue on gaps, but it does accept both standard and euro shanks. Is the extra metal under the cup hitting the receiver before the shank end bottoms out? Fwiw, I used a euro MMVI on the one I owned.

That is exactly what it is doing. I'll probably grab a Euro one. I'm using a Wick 1L right now, I love the sound it makes but just from messing with the Baer it seems to play a little more clearly than the 1L. I'm also thinking about trying a PT 44 or 48. I'm looking for a bit more clarity as I'm playing in a small community band and probably playing Bb in a brass band pretty soon.

I had a similar problem with this mouthpiece and the Dillon AGR. I had to use a Euro Baer with the American AGR piece.

IIRC, these MMVI Baer pieces have the shorter shank than the rest of the line and his signature series. And I have felt, as mentioned earlier, that the shank on my more current mouthpieces have been smaller than that of my older GWs. I wonder how the taper of the (possibly) shorter shank on the MMVI compares to anot original/regular Baer CC piece; I know that the taper on my old MMX Solo was drastically different than my GW Churada which caused the solo to stick out more.

Either way, I think a EURO would probably fit your horn as you would like without a problem.

I think the length from the bottom of the cup to the tip of the shank is the same on both the MMVI and the "original," just that the MMVI has that extra bit of mass at the bottom of the cup.

So it effectively makes it a shorter shank, although it could also be viewed as the same length of shank, just with that nub at the cup.

In case this ever comes up again, a Euro Shank MMVI fits perfectly in my 52J.
