If I go see it, maybe I'll be able to learn the story beyond what I read before I got bored with the books.

I'm still afraid that it'll be too Disney-fied.

How far did you get?

Oh wow, that was a long time ago, and I hadn't hit puberty yet.. lol

I might have gotten a bit into The Silver Chair. The title sounds somewhat familiar.

My mom was into the series more than I was, though.

That said, on your comment about Leia and her mother: Remember Luke asks "Do you remember your mother--your real mother?"
Her "memories" are visions from the force. Remember, Leia had Jedi abilities, even though they weren't developed at that time.

In Star Wars, Obi-Wan tells Luke that Darth Vader hunted down and killed the jedi. The only jedi Vader kills are Samuel L. (hardly) and the "younglings" (stupid name, why not Padiwans?) Ohhhh, what a bad ***, kills little kids. How much cooler if Darth Vader in full black armor really did hunt down the Jedi, instead of them being killed by Stormtroopers who turned on them? Then there would be a reason for Yoda and Kenobi to go into hiding, because Vader was so powerful, they knew he would kill them. Instead, after battling to a draw with Palpatine, Yoda says, "Go into hiding I must." Which lets Lucas check off of his list the item: "Why is Yoda on Dagobah?"
Did you miss the scene where Anakin storms into the Jedi Temple with a few thousand storm troopers? He kills all the jedi in the temple, though we only really see him killing the younglings. Later, when Obi-Wan checks the security holograms, we see Anakin fighting jedi in the temple.

The only missing links I found: episode 3 doesn't explain the mystery of Sifo-dyas, being the jedi who ordered the clone army, as mentioned in ep.2, or who erased the planet kamino from the jedi temple.

It was ok, but overhyped. Oh well. Sith happens.

Was that information presented in the film? I don't mind extra-cinematic information and story lines, but there ought to be a reference to it in the movie, imho.
Yes. Obi-wan rips open his chest and you see a beating heart and other organs. And several close ups show his eyes and reptillian skin. General Grievous, if he was CGI, was the best-done CGI from Lucasfilm to date.

We cheered in the theatre when that happened. The second time I watched it (yes, i saw it twice--for shame!) it didn't work as well. Too rushed. Not Yoda-like.

Flaws? Actually I like it very much and I agree that there needs to be some more stuff between EpIII and EpIV. But I have to ask "why George, why?" when for the second time a wookie swinging on a rope warrants a cheese-licious tarzan jungle call?

This made me cringe - hard. I never truly forgave George for putting this pop-culture reference into EpVI during the battle in the forest.

Other than that, great!

Now that the novelty's all worn off and i can sort of put the series into perspective, i have to say: "neat!"

What a lot of people seem to forget is that Star Wars is George Lucas' story, and sharing it with us has essentially become his life's work. The original editions still exist, and the new editions contain even more of George's story. It's a neat story and I'm glad he managed to put it to film so well.

so i'll be the first to say it, but Kudos to George Lucas!

The only thing George Lucas had in his mind when he wrote these prequels was $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
and lots of it.

but look at how well the whole series flows together!

in the 70s/80s he made 3 crappy movies with impressive special effects, people loved it!

in the 90s/00s he made 3 more crappy movies with impressive special effects, and people love them!

Over the whole thing he's got a neat story, and the prequels certainly don't overshadow the originals with impressive writing, top-notch acting, and over-coherency...if they did, this would imo ruin the flow of the entire saga..i suspect George Lucas is a bit smarter than we think.

I couldn't have penned a more concise, dead-nuts-on review of this latest eyeball/eardrum/wallet raping:

http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net ... u=episode3

Maybe it would've been more bearable had I seen it in a foreign language? I felt like Glass Jaw Joe getting sucker-punched for 140 minutes by one wincingly bad piece of dialogue after another. Body blow! Body blow! Right hook! Body blow! And the visuals? To paraphrase the great Ian Malcolm - "George, just because you can doesn't mean you should". Looks like ILM took every last pixel they could sink their geeky claws into, tortured them to within an inch of their lives, then projectile vomited them directly onto the screen.

About the only props I'll give to this whole cinematic boondoggle is for the Jabba the Hutt solo from ROTJ. That and some nice licks in the original when the Sandpeople are sucking robots up into their crawler - bee-deep... BOP... bee-deep... BOP... bah-dah bahhhh bah-dah bah-dah bah-daahhhhh...

Oh, I'm more or less with you on things. If you like it, fine. If you don't, fine. Insert cliché here - "Different strokes for different folks", "One man's trash is another man's treasure", etc.

But why can't I feel as strongly from a "thumbs down" perspective as people do about the "thumbs up"? I'm not making any value judgements about the types of people who put it in the IMDB top 250 of all time, and talk about the movies like they're the Second Coming. If that's your bag, fine. If someone wants to dress up and camp out in line for the big opening, straight up cool with me. Hell, I'll even buy them a ticket if they're short on cash and it's *that* important to them. Not my scene, but I'm easy.

I liked it. I didn't like it. If people want to pick one or the other and call it good, cool. It *is* just a movie, after all. If folks want to start shoring it up as some kind of life-changing cultural touchstone, well then expect to hear some wisecracking dissenting opinions.

"Your mileage may vary". Personally, for me, I have a hard time identifying the target audience. Kids buying into the grade school dialogue and wooden acting? Well, I guess that might work. Of course, watching someone get his legs lopped off and burned alive might not play so well with the elementary school set. Adults who want to check out the eye candy? Well, OK, if you say. Might've been nice to redirect a small fraction of that multi-billion dollar franchise into taking some classic underlying thematic elements and overlaying some *at least* passable dialogue. Worked pretty well with LOTR, I thought.

Did I really want to like it? Sure! Did I go in with an open mind? Absolutely! Am I some fanboy whose pulse races talking about intergalactic politics? Well, not quite, but that's just me. Did I feel chumped out of 2 1/2 hours of my life that I'll never get back? Yeah. Do I feel like I got my money's worth? Nope. Do I feel like there was an opportunity wasted to do something really cool with the movie besides "tie up loose ends" and "dovetail back into the originals"? Yep.

Just opinions, that's all. Expect to hear them if you want to expand the envelope of discussion in all directions.

Flame on!!
