Wonderful purchase today....an original 8" by 5.5" tintype in frame of a Civil War 'Zouave' Bandsman with his 4 valve (3+1) Eb upright Contrabass saxhorn with Allen Valves....doesn't get much neater or rarer than this....

The resolution doesn’t reveal much about the valve type.
I looked up Allen valves. Are they a rotary version of Conn’s short action pistons? Anyway the the knuckles look like they have been flattened.

That is a very rare picture. Thank you for posting it. I imagine that it was quite difficult to march with and to play anywhere near in tune.
