Chuck, I'll work on yours more tomorrow. I've eliminated EBCDIC & every variant I know of BCD, so it's obviously pretty obscure. I'll take your little hints and take a crack at it tomorrow. Right now I'm going home for a little o' THIS:

The picture is you; the words are me.

Hope you enjoyed it. Even with my secret decoder ring I can't make hide nor hair of the octal sextuplets, though. What are they?

They're "RAD50" coding as used in DEC RT-11 and RSX-11 directories. (Hence my hint of being DECidedly RAD). It's a way to put 3 characters in 16 bits. The 50 in "Rad50" is 50 octal or 40 decimal.

Here's a decoder:

Code: Select all

#include <stdio.h>
int main( int argc, char **argv)
{

  unsigned int
    orig;
  char rT[] =
   " ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ$.%0123456789";

  if (argc < 2) {
    fprintf(stderr, "\nFormat is %s octal-string...\n", *argv);
    return 255;
  }

  for(argc--, argv++ ;argc; argv++,argc--) {
    sscanf(*argv, "%o", &orig);
    printf( "%c%c%c",
	rT[(orig / 1600) % 40],
	rT[(orig / 40) % 40],
	rT[orig  % 40] );
  }
  printf("\n");
  return 0;
}

Ah. Just barely missed the RT-11. I did some work in Vaxeln on an RTVAX back -- oh, close to 20 years ago. But it was pure ASCII.

I misread your clues. I was looking for some way to have a DECimal RADix. :roll: Oh well...

I don't feel too bad about missing that one, I guess! Thanks for the challenge!

Chuck, I'm sure you do EVERYTHING your way! Fun code; I don't have a C compiler handy, so I programmed it into a spreadsheet instead.

See you around; I gotta finish my REAL work & go home -- I'm in the Eastern time zone, y'know!

Joe, glad you had fun. I've got a million of 'em.

DECstation WPS-1 coding took me almost 7 years on-and-off to make sense of. :shock: So, sometimes, I'm really slow.
