Although Mahler was a great composer, I never understood why he often had the tuba hold onto, say, a low F for multiple bars at maximum dynamic (some spots in Sym. 2). Like Charlie Vernon once said, "Composers, if you want me to play a pedal note at maximum volume, you only get a couple beats!"

Conversely, why is so much of the solo literature pitched so high?
