Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal TubaSo this appears to be Dave Fedderly's old position? He retired in 2014, so it has been several years since they have had a full time tuba player.

Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal TubaGreat orchestra, great city. Wish I was a serious enough player to audition, would be pretty awesome to land the job in my hometown.
Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal Tuba' seems to be about a mile - as the crow flies - from where that CVS was burned down...

Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal TubaEveryone in Baltimore knows that you're not supposed to go to THAT part of the city. More than anywhere else I have ever been, Baltimore is a city where small distances make huge differences. Even a few blocks in the wrong direction makes an enormous difference.
Terrible crime, horrible drug problems, schools suck, and the politics of the city are all screwed up. Taxes are high for what you get. But the nice parts of the city are very nice, and 90% of the people are great. Maybe not exactly "great city" by most people's definition, but I find it to be an extremely real, gritty, "blue collar", but friendly, genuine, and historic city. Just stick to the nice parts, and you will be fine. I lived there for almost 30 years, and had no major issues.

Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal Tuba... and good location, handy to D.C., Philly, New York for starters!

...as goes the world
Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal Tuba...and we are all in the other 10% for someone.

Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal Tuba
a few paranoid schizophrenics we may have looked at not-quite-the-way-they-wanted-us-to (who've been running loose since the late 1970's, thanks to a couple of lawsuits) Otherwise, the 10% includes public sector criminals and private sector criminals. I'm pretty sure they're in cahoots. Congratulations to the person eventually chosen to be offered this job. It's a great opportunity for someone.
Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal Tuba
My understanding is that Seth Horner was the "acting principal" tuba player since Fedderly left, but he won the principal position with the NC Symphony this summer and has moved down to the Old North State. I imagine it will be the "big audition" of 2018--I look forward to reading all of the gossip on TubeNet. [/post]
Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal TubaBased on this sort of activity, it doesn't appear (at least: not to me) that things are going to get any better any time soon.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/baltimore-detective-sean-suiter-corruption-probe-shot-with-own-gun/ In spite of the situation there, I still consider it an extremely good opportunity and stepping stone for a fine young player...but I would strongly encourage the person who is offered and accepts this employment to be extremely careful, and form good solid urban survival habits well prior to moving there. Not only do I want fine young tuba players to succeed, but I also want them to ...well... survive.
Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal TubaSeriously though, just do what everyone else does. Work in Baltimore City, and live in Baltimore County.

...and don't be a lemming. Be a survivor, and move on.
Re: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Principal TubaGood luck to all auditioning this weekend. Don’t forget to update us on each round and the winner.
