Mack Brass 540GB F Tuba vs Wessex Strauss F Tuba and Berg
I'm looking for opinions on these two horns. I'm not usually one to go Chinese, but I have been hearing good things about Wessex and really want to get an F Tuba that's under $5000 (aka one I can throw on my credit card). Background, I am a first year teacher who just loves playing tuba, not looking to play this horn profesionally. My primary horn is a B&S PT20. What are your thoughts on the Mack Brass F, Wessex Strauss and Wessex Berg if you have owned or played them.

I've owned the Berg and the Mack, which is the same as the Strauss. Of these, the Berg is the best player in every way, hands down. I had a first batch Berg which had some construction issues, but I guess they are all ironed out now.

Wessex is only going to get more of the Strauss manufactured to special order, as we are discontinuing in favour of the TF435 Berg which we believe is a better tuba, at lower price.
I will also reveal that Wessex will be introducting new piston valve F tuba (in fact two models) during 2018

I own a Berg and could not be happier with it.

The case is looking strong for the Berg. I'm also excited to see these new piston F's from Wessex.

Not to get too far off topic, but will the two new Wessex piston F's be copies or original designs?

You can bet they'll be originals. Wessex is avoiding production of clones and has phased several out of their line.tylerferris1213 wrote:Not to get too far off topic, but will the two new Wessex piston F's be copies or original designs?

For those interested in knowing, the Berg is $1000 off right now, making it even cheaper than the Mack. Just ordered mine! Haven't played yet, just thought it was a great deal and they have the 2 week trial period if you don't like it.
