I think we need a new poem about the tuba!
Hi again, everyone - while doing research on the early history of the Sousaphone, I came across a long forgotten poem about the tuba. Give it a look here: https://tubapastor.blogspot.com/2017/12 ... -tuba.html
I'm confident we can do better! Any poets out there willing to sing the praises of our beloved instrument in a fresh new way?! Go for it!

Played an F. E. Olds 4-valve BBb in high school (late '70s)
Led the USC Trojan Marching Band tuba section (early '80s)
Now playing an F. Schmidt (=VMI) 3301 and goofing around
on a 1927 Pan American 64K Sousaphone Grand

I think I’d have to go to Cuba
To see a trumpet even rival a tuba
A horn with mouthpiece thus impress’d
With air of player’s swelling breast
A horn who’s bass line has been lain
Below the treble’s sweet refrain
Tubas are played by fools like me
But almost all will sure agree!

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who made a tuba from a bucket
He took it to band
They gave him the hand

This season a Saviour was born
To the toots of a big old bass horn
Played by a shepherd
To fend off a leopard
But this tale is really not sworn!
Merry Christmas!

I seem to have a date with a copy of Cyrano Debergerac...
"Sir, your tuba is rather large!"
etc.

Thanks for playing!

Indeed, it is large; but I have never heard it called a tuba.humBell wrote:"Sir, your tuba is rather large!"

To Tabor:
I love your little limerick
To amuse it really did the trick
But something's not so fine
There is no last, fifth line
So I had to try to finish it

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who made a tuba from a bucket
He took it to band
They gave him the hand
He packed up, decided to truck it.
There once was a tuba named king
the bell of which really could ring
'twas large and was loud
its owner was proud
And with wind he taught it to sing
There once was a tuba called York
that was played by somewhat of a dork
His wife thought it funny
he spent all the money
and could not get a new spit cork
There once was a tuba of brass
that was left outside in the grass
without any reasons
it weathered the seasons
more eyesore than pain in the ***

In youth, I played a trombone,
outgrew it and played sousaphone
but through thicker years
'grew into my ears
my sousaphone I have outgrown
I bought a new tuba for band
it didn't quite go as I'd planned
heard Gene play a ditty
Buy It Now! that one's pretty"
and now I owe fourty-five grand

And a haiku:
I think it's quite grand
Tuba playing in a band
I play when I can

Tuba playing in a band
I play when I can

OK, this limerick has been stuck on my desk for years.
Some of my colleagues will no doubt realize who this particular tubist was... but if you tell his widow about this she may never speak to me again...
For the sake of propriety, I am leaving off the last few words. those of you who have the correct mindset for completing it will have no trouble.
There once was a tubist named Ed,
Who practiced a whole lot in bed.
Since he played on his "C",
It was easy to see,
Why poor Ed................
Oh, I miss my old friend.....
