Tell them to go on a five mile run and NOT breathe through their mouths. Air flow rates while playing tuba can approximate those encountered when running.
Not many people could take in a full breath in under a second through their nose only.
A simple way to learn how the breathe for playing tuba is to run and mimic the way you breath when you play.

Just get this hat- then they won't have to ask...

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Re: mouth-breathing
Nose breathing very likely does contribute to your intellectual faculties. No kidding. It's about nitric oxide, NO, which is present in high concentrations in the paranasal sinuses, so breath passing through your nasal passages picks this NO up and distributes it through the body. And among many other things, NO serves as a neurotransmitter, so it plays a role in the function of your brain cells.
We would also be well advised to hum a lot, which shakes a lot more NO out of those paranasal sinuses into the nasal airway. Humming Greatly Increases Nasal Nitric Oxide
