VMI 2103 info request

Post by Alex F »

Does anyone have an accurate source for the weight of a VMI 2103 in lacquer?

I've searched the archives here w/o success. On the B&S website, the specs for the PT-1 AKA 3103 (NOT 3301) do not include the weight, which may be higher than a 2103 because the PT-1 has a larger bell. There is no listing for the 2103 or its European label the 103 on the web-site.

I know that the 2103 is, or was, aold as the F.Schmidt 2103. the BM website gives a weight of 17 pounds. I talked to another retailer who told me that he thought the 2103 weighed about 22 pounds.

So - Does anyone really know how much it weighs? And, if so, what is the basis for your answer?

I am seriously considering a purchase of this horn. It seems to get very favorable comments from folks on this site, at least for a non CC horn. My teacher recently bought a Jupiter 582 which I have held and have heard him play. I thought that it sounded pretty good but Rich could make a fuel funnel sound good. It is quite heavy though and is a piston horn. I think a rotary would work better for me. Moreover, the bore size seems better for a guy my age, and - the price is right.

As always, all replies appreciated.

Well, I wore mine in a gig bag around school for part of the day today, and I'd approximate the weight as "too damn heavy." When get it back from school tonight I'll try and remember to weigh it.

Thanks for the replys. You are all worth your weight in goldbrass.

Another question, what MP do you find works best for you with the 2103? I don't know what MP comes with the horn. The only tuba MP I have is some generic 24AW copy. I have also received recommendations for a Bach 7b and a Bobo Symphonic replica MP.

Thanks again.

Thanks again folks.

Just out of curiosity, I checked the price on a PT-1. Custom wants $5.9 K which does include a hard case. I was told that the PT-1 is "very different" from a 2103 and is not made in the same place where the 2103s are made.

Karl:

Thanks for the information

Regarding the case for your VMI: It is my understanding that the MTS 1209V should fit your horn. This is the largest of the MTS tuba cases. You might want to check this out with Dave F. or Roger Lewis, but this is what Roger told me.
