I'm still able to find the occasional bargain. Just takes tweaking keywords and patience.

Re: what is needed on eBay: (is love, sweet love)
You all are obviously better at detecting the OP's sarcasm than i am.
I think i am okay with the amount of stuff i'm not interested in. It keeps it challenging, and there is mildly the hope that i might notice something others don't (or just don't care about) and thus get it cheap.
If i think about it, i am mildly bothered by "what others who looked at this also looked at" listings, but if i really cared, i 'd looked at more of the double bell sousaphones..."
On that note, i found this intriguing French listing because of that:

Meh, not everything is perfect yet.

wasn't even counting but probably nailed it - those would be the conceivably playable. Including the overpriced, the undesirable models, the scary-levels of repairs needed, ect.humBell wrote:What's the remaining 14%TheGoyWonder wrote:30% new stuff at retail prices (WHY would you pay ebay fees on that)

Re: what is needed on eBay:
A good part of that remaining 14% would be baritones and euphoniums listed as tubas.

I bought my Euph, my EEb Tuba, 6 or 7 other euphoniums, 3 or 4 trumpets, 5 or 6 trombones, plus countless other crap on ebay between 2005 and 2012.
Now eBay has bumped it's selling fees (to 10%) and the used market has died off a bit, so most of it is junk.

I almost never look at eBay in the morning, but I just did and found out there were 30 scam listings for brass located in Canada. (I usually check what's available only in Canada, sometimes I get lucky with that.

Re: what is needed on eBay:
eBay is also moving away from Paypal within the next year to another payment service (apparently less % taken out of seller's profits) we'll see. You're right, a couple years ago there was much more cool stuff on there and now very rarely do you find them. Probably has a lot to do with 10% seller fees + 3% Paypal.

Re: what is needed on eBay:
Ebay owns Paypal, am I right? They used to, anyway, and I can't imagine how they could be so stupid as to let it get away from them. If they're changing their payment system, I would guess that just means Paypal is going to be branching out to provide that service, but if it's just about the total overhead of an Ebay sale, the obvious place to save a percent or two would be on the Ebay side.
The cool stuff experience has dwindled with the flood of cheap junk, the "worthless crap" and "new instruments offered at everyday prices", where I take "worthless crap" to also refer mainly new stuff, cheaply manufactured and available by the container load. If we could somehow filter that stuff out and see the old flea market items, there might be fewer than a few years ago, but still a lot. But if Ebay doesn't figure it out, that won't last forever. They can say goodbye to the flea market and the people who go there for that, if they can't put a lid on the ocean of cheap new stuff that flows into the categories and drowns the interesting items.

Re: what is needed on eBay:
The way I understand or remember it, PayPal was independent and was created as a payment system with ebay usage firmly in mind. ebay then acquired PayPal. Now ebay is spinning off PayPal, my guess is that they want it to look and be independent from ebay (ie, not thought of as an ebay payment system only) to better position themselves in the growing market of electronic payment systems.Donn wrote:Ebay owns Paypal, am I right?
Again my opinion - PayPal was innovative early on but is now starting to fall behind many of the newer payment systems. ebay hopes by spinning it off they can better capitalize on the burgeoning market.
