Re: Tuba Naming: Do you do it?, Why do you do it?, Names?King Jumbo Sousaphone: ‘Cilla , THE King, Bertha2, or the Big A$$ Trumpet
King 2341: Lori Beth (named after the friend who helped me acquire it) King 1271 Sousaphone: …haven’t named this one and not sure why I have a ton of bass guitars and i’ve Never named them.....not sure why. jc MrBasseyPants - jc
My three Kings: 2007 King 2341 | 1935 King Giant 1271 | 1925 King 1265 Jumbo (now with four valves) WARNING: This tuba player has been known to get his groove on via bass guitar as well!
Re: Tuba Naming: Do you do it?, Why do you do it?, Names? The only instruments of mine that ever had names were my two upright basses, both names by a guitar player I work with. The current one is "Blondie" (it has a blonde finish), and he has a matching guitar he dubbed "Dagwood." My previous bass earned the nickname "Bertha" in the airport in Tacoma, WA on the way to Victoria, BC. I was wheeling it through the airport in a large fiberglass travel case. I always get the, "Is that a cello" BS, but one lady really looked perplexed and a bit worried (post-9/11). She asked what it was, and the guitar player randomly came up with, "It's Bertha, his ex-mother-in-law." Her eyes got big and she quickly moved out. The name "Bertha" stuck.
I never named tubas or any other instrument. Never felt the need. I don't name any of my guns or other things that qualify as some kind of tool. I'm not unwilling, but it never was something I thought about. I don't think there is a tradition with naming instruments as there is with boats, ships, or (in recent decades) Jeeps. All that, plus $8.00, will get you a venti at Starbucks.
Or in my case, a large can of Folgers.
Re: Tuba Naming: Do you do it?, Why do you do it?, Names? The CC and the F... I know, super original.

Re: Tuba Naming: Do you do it?, Why do you do it?, Names? My Conn 20J is "Fiona" after the beautiful ogre in the Shrek movie.
My Martin Medium Bb is "Myrtle Martin". My Conn 20K is "Suzy". Not very original but it works. And yes, all female.
Re: Tuba Naming: Do you do it?, Why do you do it?, Names?I don't name my instruments. But........ if I did, I'm kind if partial to Dreznelda Glumphbutt!

Re: Tuba Naming: Do you do it?, Why do you do it?, Names?I don't have names for my horns in the sense of 'people names' but I do call them by their model name and/or maker.
If its one of my Martins (of which there are several) I use the model name (i.e. the Mammoth, the Indiana, the Committee, the Handcraft, etc.) and If it's not a Martin, I just use the brand name (i.e. the King, The Conn, the Olds, etc.). I do notice, however, that when using pronouns to refer to my instruments I always seem to say 'she' instead of 'it'. I never really consciously decided to do that, i just seemed to do it without really thinking about it. I suppose it has something to do with this line of logic:
"Some men are macho men. Others are Martin men."
Martin: Handcraft Mammoth Sousa, Mammoth Tuba, Indiana Tuba, Baritone, Committee Trombone, Handcraft Valve Bone, Indiana Trumpet King Moster Eb Custom Mini Tuba Roth-Reynolds Cornet
