Check out the Sibelius 2 with Mehta on Teldec. Never heard tuba like that in that piece before.

That's a good'n. The liner notes tell who's on what channel, although they managed to switch L and R(!). Despite that, it's still obvious when Warren's playing.DP wrote: 1988

I heartily second Sibelius 2 as my favorite. Warren's incredible sound and musicianship help make this a powerful interpretation of this work. This recording shows Warren Deck in his prime!doublebuzzing wrote:Check out the Sibelius 2 with Mehta on Teldec. Never heard tuba like that in that piece before.
When I perfomed Sibelius 2 several years ago and having had the priviledge of studying with Warren, I let this recording and Warren's teachings influence the way I played Sibelius. It was an exhilerating experience.

There's a Finlandia on that CD as well and there's some monster tuba presence on that!hbcrandy wrote:I heartily second Sibelius 2 as my favorite. The recording of John Steven's Moondance that used to be on Youtube (Bobo, Perantoni, Phillips, and Warren Deck). His cadenza was great!
Anyone happen to know where there might be a copy of that?
I know it was recorded with basically the same group (I think Gene Pokorny instead of Warren Deck), but I really don't like that version all that much.

Just to add another, the so-called "Deck Special" masterclass recording is jaw-dropping. I hope the original audio tape can get mastered and released sometime in the future.

Pictures at an Exhibition. I don't remember who was conducting, but Warren lights it up on Baba Yaga.

Same as my post on the favorite Chester recordings - Canadian Brass: Red, White and Brass. You'll wanna sell your tuba after you hear Warren play Voluntary on Old Hundredth.

Re: Favorite Warren Deck recording?
Somewhere out there is a Mahler 5 radio broadcast with Mehta conducting. Everything about that recording is aaaammmmaaazzziiiinnngggggggg! There are parts where I'm just like I also have the "Deck Special" and it was truly a life changing recording. I wish I sounded at least 1/10th as good! There is also this one recording of the NY Phil brass quintet playing the "Earle of Oxford's March" and at first I thought it was the entire brass section. It was truly scary when I learned that it was just 5 players. The sound is soooo huge!

Can you please post the youtube link? Thank you.ren wrote:when I was in school everyone EVERYONE had the tape of him playing excerpts with his old brass section at a conference after winning the NY Phil job. The tape is up on youtube,
The execution was spotty but Warren was a very unique player, in terms of his sound. He changed the tuba world a bit.

Re: Favorite Warren Deck recording?
Comparing the radio broadcasts to the commercial recordings of the era is especially eye opening. Someone made a CD for me from a tape of Hindemith recording, Mathis der Maler and Symphonic Metamorphosis. Visceral is the word that comes to mind. IMO, being in NYC during this time, the Masur recordings don’t compare to the live concerts; I’ve never been the hugest fan of the TELDEC mixes. More vibrant sounding in the hall vs the CD.

My favorite orchestral recording of Warren's is the Planets with NY Phil under Mehta. Fantastic tuba playing.

Re: Favorite Warren Deck recording?
There was a Teldec release in the 90's with a live Prokofiev 5 with Kurt Masur. He was miked very well and just sounded amazing.
I feel like I heard him do a nice Bydlo on recording, but I don't remember which recording specifically.
My favorite may be the Gerhard Meinl Sextet recording with Pilafian, Sass, etc. He sounded awesome on that.

Re: Favorite Warren Deck recording?
I totally agree with this. The recording of Franck d Minor sounds like the low brass is in the next room. Not sure if it was the recording engineers or the conductor. Apparently Masur was always giving them "the hand." Warren said once that Masur asked him to play something softer, so he faked playing and just put the mouthpiece up to his lips but did not play at all. Masur said it was still too loud, so Warren had to embarrass him in front of the orchestra by telling him he didn't play that time.jtuba wrote:Comparing the radio broadcasts to the commercial recordings of the era is especially eye opening.
