I heard them in 1981, a really good group.

As it so happens I'm going to be in NYC Thursday night and could go to this show - thanks for posting it.
The NY Phil is also playing that night and their program is:
Louis Andriessen: Agamemnon (World Premiere–New York Philharmonic Commission)
Stravinsky: Violin Concerto
Stravinsky: Symphonies of Wind Instruments (1947 version)
Debussy: La Mer
Which should I go to, given that I've never seen either group perform live?

I vote for the NY Phil, since they are the hometown group. Avery Fisher Hall (or whatever they call it now) and Lincoln Center are worth seeing on their own.tmz1m wrote:As it so happens I'm going to be in NYC Thursday night and could go to this show - thanks for posting it.

I like the SFSO program better, but save SFSO for a trip to SF.
Things like this make me miss living in the city.

Plus, the Stravinsky "Symphonies of Wind Instruments" is a really cool piece (I played it once many years ago), and isn't programmed nearly as much as the ones being performed by the SFSO.
It will always be here, don't lose all hopebort wrote:Things like this make me miss living in the city.

BCS is a sad spin-off of the original and I used to live in Delaware -- I only go back when forced or paid.bloke wrote:

This makes good sense, thanks! I'm currently on a flight that arrives too late to make it, but I'm going to try to switch that around today.bort wrote:I vote for the NY Phil, since they are the hometown group. My advice was for Tim, who lives in Denver -- closer to SF than NY. Anyone who lives in NY already -- yes, makes sense to see SFSO. But for someone who lives closer to SF than NY... maybe better to see the NY Phil.
Is there *really* a bad choice here?

Re: SFSO (Jeff Anderson, principal tuba) in Carnegie Hall
How often one visits these two cities would be more important in the calculation that actual proximity. Many folks visit New York MUCH more often than SF. If the OP travels New York every 2-3 years and San Francisco every 10-15 years, seeing SFSO might make more sense...bort wrote:My advice was for Tim, who lives in Denver -- closer to SF than NY. Another consideration is that MTT will be retiring in 2020. Seeing SFSO with MTT is a treat and if you haven't seen them together, there isn't much time left. I feel very fortunate to live in the SF Bay Area and that I get to hear them perform multiple times a year.

I've decided! I'm going to see the San Francisco team! (Actually it was never a contest --- I have subscription tickets to that one!)
