Has anyone purchased or tried a Wessex Stumpy? I am shopping for a spare, back up, walk about, small/handy BBb tuba. The Stumpy appeals to me with the relatively large bore.
Any experiences/impressions/opinions to share?
Would appreciate it.

They are a decent horn. I thought it was a bit stuffy when playing but that was a good trade off for the size and weight. Could make alot of noise with it.

IMO you would be far better off with an Amati ABB 223 which are actually playable and can be had for very little money on the "pre-enjoyed" market.

<Edit> Not a Jim Laabs fan but they sell the European built ABB 223 for hardly more than the stuffy Chinese piece:

The Amati 223 was an nice 1/2 to 3/4 size horn. They could take a good beating by kinds and still play.bigtubby wrote:IMO you would be far better off with an Amati ABB 223 which are actually playable and can be had for very little money on the "pre-enjoyed" market.

If they are all like the one I saw about a year ago then I would run far far away. It should have never been sold to a poor unsuspecting customer.
