Hello fellow tubenetters!
I am very excited to be performing the "Birth of the Cool" charts at the Berks Jazz Festival, Friday evening, April 5th.
For those of you who are not familiar with "Birth of the Cool" please check it out. It is a Miles Davis Album from the 50's. Many of the arrangements were written by Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, and others.
"What does this have to do with tuba?" you may ask.... The instrumentation of the charts is a nonet, consisting of alto sax, bari sax, trumpet (Miles), horn, trombone, tuba (Bill Barber), piano , bass, and drums.
Very cool charts. If you are in the Reading, PA area that weekend check us out!

I heard a performance of "Birth of the Cool" by the faculty at IU Jacobs School of Music in 2012, with Pat Harbison, trumpet, Brent Wallarab, trombone, Tom Walsh, alto saxophone; Ned Boyd, baritone sax; Celeste Holler Seraphinoff, French horn; Luke Gillespie, piano; Jeremy Allen, bass; and Steve Houghton, drums. DANIEL PERANTONI ably played the tuba part. Very enjoyable.

You will enjoy the rewards and challenges of this great, iconic music.
I had always wanted to play these arrangements - but they were unavailable for many years. When they did become available I was fortunate to play the “Birth of the Cool” book a dozen times - with a great band. I had met and played with Bill Barber in the Goldman Band in NYC in the 1980’s. What a gentleman, and a fine tuba player - even much later in life.
