What should I wear to a college audition?

I'm thinking a business casual, but what's your opinion?

Depends on the studio professor I would say. The least I've ever worn to a college audition was a polo, khakis, and oxfords. Nobody said anything.

Look great. Suit & tie. Make sure your suit FITS correctly and is freshly laundered. Shirt pressed and don't forget to polish your shoes. WITHOUT exception, every audition I witnessed that the candidate dressed sloppily, they played sloppily. Seriously, this is very important.

Also, take a shower and get a haircut about a week before.

Whatever you decide to wear, PRACTICE IN IT before the audition. Do not make the first time you play in a new jacket and/or shirt and tie the audition.

So, I'm much less experienced in college and/or professional auditions than those who have posted here already. But I'm pretty experienced in degrees of appropriate attire in various professional settings.

Personally, for this situation, I would think that a blazer with a dress shirt and slacks, with no tie, and dress shoes, would be more than enough to demonstrate that you care about your appearance and know how to look professional. Presuming, of course, that the blazer isn't too loud, the colors are conservative and coordinated, the clothes clean and ironed, shoes shined, etc.

I'm not sure that "suit and tie" is necessary.

I'd really encourage taking a shower more recently than a week before the audition.

^ This!!! Especially if you are not regularly playing/performing in a tie/jacket outfit. I've also started getting my "playing" dress shirts 1/2 a neck size larger than my "wearing" dress shirts. It's usually not enough to look loose, but avoids the tightness created from the larger throat during playing. Then again, maybe I just size 'normally' on a 1/4 size

I've worn a blazer and dress shirt without a tie. It's nice to be able to breathe.

For all of mine, I've worn a dress shirt, tie, and khakis. I kept the top button of my shirt unbuttoned for easy breathing. Make sure whatever you wear is comfy.

I was gonna say, dress like you're already there. So sweatpants, a t-shirt from a rival college, and a hoodie. And Crocs.
