Tuner Apps For tuba

Post by tubaport »

Hello everyone. I’ve been a die hard advocate for physical Korg tuners most of my life but with today’s technology, can’t get students to venture past the tuners available on their smart phones. With that in mind, what tuner apps have you used with success, particularly with picking up the low range pitches?

I’m not too concerned with the difference in what the apps cost, but more interested in how well they work. Thanks to all for their feedback!

My favourites are

TE tuner - actually Called Tonal Energy Tuner
https://tonalenergy.com" target="_blank
It is a great runner but also has drone, analysis and a good metronome built in.
It is adjustable to wind, strings or voice, with a variable in-tune rand and damping settings that are very easy to get to. I found setting the in-tune range lower with younger students to help a lot.
Picks me up all the way down to pedals.
Available on Apple and Android. roughly $3-5.

Cleartune - free or sometimes free
just a basic tuner tunes "normal" range well and okay to pedal but not below.

Peterson iStrobsoft
$10
Great like the old Peterson tuners. just an app. Full range.

The mic on the iPhone (6S) is not great at picking up the tuba's low end. But... I sometimes use InstaTuner. For trombone, mostly. My Korg (TM-40?) is better for tuba.
