Made a Mouthpiece Case

A few weeks ago I asked for ideas for a mouthpiece case. There are lots of pre made cases for 1 to 3 mouthpieces but I only could find 1 for more than that. However it was very expensive. I purchased a case (Nanuk 905) with foam that had a pre cut grid of foam. I laid out a pattern that would accommodate 6 to 8 mouthpieces. Then removed a very small 2x2 piece of foam for each mouthpiece. This is considerably smaller than the mouthpiece. I then pushed the mouthpiece into the centre of the 2x2 grid and twisted it as it went in. This created a nice little pocket for the mouthpiece. Total time 15 minutes.

I made a case that held recorders from tenor to garklein.

(Never had a gig on garklein, can't imagine why. People are just not music lovers.)

Anyway, I did it by laminating the foam. Multiple layers fit into a briefcase, $3 from a thrift shop. Then each layer has a different size hole carefully cut to give a 3D empty space when they're stacked.

I didn't do the same for mouthpieces because I only use 1. Once you know what works, you're done.

I've made some pads for shoulder-mount tubas, and took care to isolate the foam rubber in the pads from the silver plating on the instruments.

These cases and their close cousins made by Pelican are created to protect sensitive/fragile/precious things like surveyors' equipment, photographic equipment and firearms. I can't imagine that they'd use foam that would interfere with any type of metal plating without some sort of warning label. If it's just silver that interacts, that shouldn't be an issue with mouthpieces, which are "German silver," which is nickel, yes?

If this is a real problem, I'll need to take my Hasselblad out of my Pelican!

The material is like a open pore soft foam vs rubber. I have used the same cases for silver covered guns without issue. But I will monitor. Just in case.
