I always though it was based on rigidity. Bags are, well, bags: softer, non-rigid, usually cloth (sometimes leather), probably padding but definitely identifiable as bags. Cases are hard, rigid, usually made of fiberglass or ABS or some non-flexible material with padding to protect the instrument on the inside of the shell.

yeah...I'm just making a smart-_ _ _ comment observing that some of the pricey bag-makers refer to their bags as "cases".

re: pricey bags...
Don't ask me to try to make any sort of a bag that anyone would like and sell it at any price. I can't.

Like someone above said, I usually think of cases as hard/rigid on the outside -- usually plastic or fiberglass or wood exterior. I think of bags as pretty soft/flimsy, even if they are well-padded. Examples: Altieri gig 'bags', Walt Johnson 'cases'. And then you have what I call 'soft cases', like the ones by Protec and others. They are in-between 'real' cases and 'real' bags.

Oh..... In that case (get it?) I'd guess if a bag sold for more than $400-$500 they can call it anything they want, so I'd have to agree with your original premise.

At a $500 price point, a bag better protect as well as a case.

Drop either from much more than an inch or two off the ground, and I'd be concerned.
