I was out of school for almost a decade and a half before returning to college and earning a Music Ed degree (often playing at or above local Performance major standards) by attending school fulltime including summer sessions for 3 and a half years. I found that I had a distinct advantage over most of the "kids" there. Pell grants, academic and music scholarships, and student loans paved the way.

P.S. I am in the process of trying to get a band director job right now and have found there to be a lot less positions and a lot more candidates (many with masters and experience out the wazoo) than I anticipated.
