Assistantships at Washington State University for Fall 2020

Greetings to all you tuba and euphonium players! My TA is graduating this year, so Washington State University anticipates teaching assistantships available for Fall 2020. Potential teaching assignments include studio instruction, general education courses, music major courses, athletic bands, recording studio, music technology, and stage management. General education courses include topics such as film music, world music, rock history, and jazz history. In addition to these assistantships, WSU has funding for a diverse scholars program, an initiative designed to fund underserved/underrepresented communities in graduate education. Both euphonium and tuba players are encouraged to apply!

The financial package is quite nice! Teaching assistantships come with a stipend of $14,449.50 per year ($1,605/month), health and dental insurance, and a non-resident tuition waiver. Applicants must have a 3.00 cumulative GPA as well as a core undergraduate music GPA of 3.00 (theory, history, and ear training). An application includes the online WSU graduate school application and fee, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and an audition/interview with the brass faculty. Live auditions are preferred, but recorded auditions may be accepted if a trip to Washington becomes impossible.

WSU is a large research university located in Pullman, WA and is a member of the Pac 12 athletic conference. The tuba-euphonium studio is thriving. At an average of 13-14 players, the studio contains first-year students to graduate students. The studio culture here is positive, encouraging, inclusive, and supports a friendly kind of competition. Members of the studio have been prizewinners at state, regional, and international competitions. Graduates have gone on to doctoral programs, public school teaching positions, and perform in professional ensembles. Our music building houses a state-of-the-art recording studio made available to students for recording projects. In 2013 and 2017, the studio helped host the Northwest Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conferences, and they performed at the 2015 NW Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Boise, ID. We usually have 2-3 guest artists visit each year for recitals, lessons, and master classes.
